A new inclusive playspace in Maroubra’s Coral Sea Park will be opened by the Hon Anthony Roberts, Minister for Planning and Homes and Mayor Dylan Parker on Wednesday 3 August.
Council received $200,000 funding from the NSW Government’s Everybody Can Play program to upgrade the existing playground and create a world class playspace that has been designed to include everyone in the community.
The innovate design allows children of all abilities to play together, including those with physical disabilities and mobility impairments, or spectrum disorders such as autism.
“This new inclusive playspace means it is much easier for every child to access play equipment and enjoy the fun that such an essential activity can bring,” said Mayor Dylan Parker.
“An inclusive playspace means it is easy for people to get to the playground, to access the equipment, there are a variety of items they can interact with and there is shading and seating that allows families or carers to stay for as long as they want.
“It’s important to us that there is equal access to our open spaces for all people, whatever their ability and I’m looking forward to seeing the enjoyment this will bring to so many families.”
Late in 2021, Council spoke with families in the local area to gain an understanding of what they wanted and designed a playspace that took this feedback into consideration. The new playspace at Coral Sea Park includes:
- Slides and swings for bigger kids
- Sensory play for toddlers
- Toddler swing
- Wheelchair accessible carousel
- More outdoor furniture, including a drinking fountain
The new opening of the inclusive playspace starts at 3pm and will include free ice cream and entertainment for kids and their families.
Everyone Can Play is a commitment by the NSW Government to the creation of better and more inclusive playspaces across NSW.
