Exciting things are taking shape in Alexandria with the construction of the new Huntley Street Recreation Centre, a modern indoor sports and recreation hub designed to support the growing needs of local families and active kids.
Currently under construction at 6–8 Huntley Street, the project involves transforming an existing 1980s warehouse into a beautifully designed, community-focused recreation centre. Works began in November 2024 and are expected to take around 18 months, with Kane Constructions delivering the $25 million project in partnership with the City of Sydney.
What’s coming to Huntley Street?
Once complete, the centre will offer an impressive range of facilities, including:
-
Four indoor multipurpose courts suitable for basketball, netball, futsal, volleyball, gymnastics and badminton
-
Outdoor flexible practice courts for skills training and casual play
-
A dedicated fitness space
-
Change rooms, reception and administration areas
-
Seating for spectators, making it easy for parents to cheer on their kids
-
A kiosk for refreshments
-
Landscaped public areas and bike parking at the front of the building
The building will also feature a new canopy façade and upgraded surrounding public spaces, improving accessibility and linking the centre to nearby cycleways, including Shea’s Creek cycleway.
Why this is great news for families
For families with kids, the Huntley Street Recreation Centre will be a game-changer. Indoor courts mean all-weather sports and activities, perfect for after-school programs, weekend games and school holiday sessions. The multipurpose design allows children of all ages to try different sports in a safe, supervised environment—helping build confidence, teamwork skills and healthy habits.
Accessible design ensures that everyone can enjoy the facility, including children with additional needs. With seating areas, a kiosk and landscaped spaces, it’s also a welcoming place for parents and siblings to spend time while activities are underway.
Designed with sustainability in mind
Sustainability is at the heart of the project. The entire rooftop will be covered in solar panels to generate power, while rainwater will be collected, stored and reused onsite. Natural lighting and ventilation have been carefully planned, and the landscaped courtyard with planted trees will create a greener, more pleasant environment for the community.
Easy to get to
Located close to densely populated residential and commercial areas, the centre is approximately a 1.3km walk from Green Square and St Peters train stations, near the Bourke Road cycleway and accessible by bus—making it easy for families to visit without relying on cars.
A future community hub
The Huntley Street Recreation Centre is set to become a vibrant community hub, addressing the growing demand for indoor sports facilities in Sydney’s inner south. For Eastern Suburbs families willing to travel for high-quality recreation options, this new centre promises a safe, inclusive and sustainable space where kids can stay active and families can connect.
