Breast Cancer Doesn’t Wait: Why Local Mums Are Being Urged to Book Their Free Breast ScreenBetween school drop-offs, work, family life and everything in between, it’s easy for mums to put their own health last. But BreastScreen NSW is reminding women across South Eastern Sydney and the Illawarra that when it comes to breast cancer, waiting isn’t an option.
Breast cancer remains one of the most common cancers affecting women in Australia, and early detection can quite literally save lives. Yet right now, almost 50% of NSW women aged 50–74 are overdue for their recommended breast screen, and many don’t realise just how important regular screening is — even when there are no symptoms.
In fact, 85% of women diagnosed with breast cancer through BreastScreen NSW had no symptoms at the time of their screen. No lump. No pain. No warning signs. This is exactly why routine screening is so powerful — it can detect breast cancer early, often before you notice any changes yourself.
Who can get a free breast screen?
All women aged 40 and over are eligible for a free breast screen through BreastScreen NSW. There’s no referral needed, and clinics are conveniently located across South Eastern Sydney, making it easier to fit into busy schedules.
For women aged 50–74, regular screening every two years is strongly recommended, as this age group has the highest risk of developing breast cancer.
Breast Cancer Doesn’t Wait — and neither should you
BreastScreen NSW’s current “Breast Cancer Doesn’t Wait” campaign encourages women to make time for their breast screen, even when life feels nonstop. It’s a gentle but important reminder that prioritising your health isn’t selfish — it’s essential.
Whether you’re a mum, carer, daughter, sister or friend, booking your breast screen is a simple step that could make a life-saving difference.
