National Hot Cross Bun Day is back! On Friday, March 13, more than 500 Bakers Delight bakeries across Australia will give away 300 free hot cross buns – that’s over 150,000 buns up for grabs nationwide.
Following the overwhelming response to last year’s inaugural National Hot Cross Bun Day, Bakers Delight is cementing it as an annual tradition to kick off the Easter season. Traditional, Choc Chip or Apple & Cinnamon – whatever you’re craving, it’s freshly baked and free for the first 300 customers through the door at each bakery. No purchase required.
“Last year’s National Hot Cross Bun Day exceeded all our expectations. We had queues out the door before opening and the energy was incredible,” said Jodi Murray-Freedman, Chief Marketing Officer at Bakers Delight.

“It’s become a highlight for our customers and our team – a proper celebration of the Easter season and a chance to share what we do best with the community. We’re expecting even bigger crowds this year.”
National Hot Cross Bun Day falls right in the heart of Bakers Delight’s busiest period. Between January and April, the bakery chain produces around 18 million freshly baked hot cross buns. During Easter week alone, 4.2 million buns will come out of ovens across the country – that’s roughly seven buns every second.

To meet demand, Bakers Delight will use roughly 66 tonnes of chocolate chips for their Choc Chip Hot Cross Buns, 105 tonnes of sultanas and 75 tonnes of currants for the Traditional variety, and 27 tonnes of Pink Lady apples (roughly 173,342 apples!) for the Apple & Cinnamon Hot Cross Buns.
Customers are encouraged to arrive early on National Hot Cross Bun Day, with bakeries opening their doors at regular trading hours on Friday, March 13. Free buns will be distributed on a first come, first served basis until the allocation per bakery runs out.
