If you’ve ever wished an art gallery felt a little more like a playground (and a lot more kid-friendly), this one’s for you. The Art Gallery of NSW has transformed its most dramatic underground space into a free, all-ages art park, and it’s unlike anything else in Sydney.
Artist Mike Hewson has completely reimagined the Nelson Packer Tank as a place where families can play, explore, create and relax together. Think less “quiet gallery whispers” and more “climb, swing, splash and stay awhile”.
Art You Can Touch, Climb and Play In
This isn’t a look-don’t-touch exhibition. Inside the underground art park, kids can let loose on monkey bars and swings, cool off in a water play zone, and explore a space that feels part playground, part park, part creative wonderland.
Yes, there’s even a real sauna and steam room (for the grown-ups 👀), plus working barbecues — so you can literally bring your snags and make a day of it.
Everything has been built using thousands of salvaged and recycled materials, making it a great conversation starter about sustainability, reuse and creativity.
Made for Families, Made for Everyone
Designed for all ages, this playful exhibition encourages kids to move their bodies, use their imagination and interact with art in a totally different way. Parents can relax, explore alongside their kids, or simply enjoy watching them engage with a space that’s welcoming, inclusive and refreshingly unpretentious.
It’s free, flexible, and perfect for school holidays, weekends or an after-school wander — especially on Wednesdays when the gallery stays open late.
