Randwick City Council is making strides towards creating a new public walkway connecting South Coogee and Lurline Bay, with the recent purchase of a $4.9 million property on Cuzco Street. This long-anticipated development brings the vision of a continuous coastal walkway closer to reality.
Bridging the Gap
Currently, walkers traveling between Coogee and Maroubra must detour inland to Malabar Road. The addition of this new connection will eliminate the detour, enhancing the experience of enjoying the breathtaking Randwick coastline.
The project, more than two decades in the making, builds on an agreement reached in 2002 between Randwick City Council and the late Ellen Waugh OAM, a prominent local arts figure and historical society president. As part of the agreement, the property—Ellen’s family home since the 1930s—was rezoned as open space in 2012 to facilitate its future inclusion in the coastal walkway.
Honoring Ellen Waugh’s Legacy
Mayor Dylan Parker reflected on Ellen Waugh’s contributions to the community, stating, “The late Ellen Waugh was a luminary of the Australian art scene who cared deeply for her local community. Naming this iconic walkway after her is a fitting recognition of an extraordinary legacy.”
Ellen passed away in January 2024, just shy of her 100th birthday. The sale of her property was finalized with her estate in October 2024, paving the way for the next phase of the coastal walk’s development.
A Coastal Vision Realized
This latest addition is part of Randwick Council’s broader commitment to creating a seamless coastal walking experience from Bondi to Malabar. Previous milestones include:
- 2018: Completion of a 1.15km track at Malabar Headland, connecting with the Boora Point Walking Track.
- 2019: A new track at Kamay Botany Bay National Park, ensuring safe passage through the NSW Golf Course at La Perouse.
What’s Next?
Concept designs for the South Coogee to Lurline Bay connection are underway, with public consultations planned for 2025-26. Once completed, this section will become a jewel in the crown of Sydney’s iconic coastal walkway, offering uninterrupted access to some of the city’s most spectacular ocean views.
Stay tuned for updates as Randwick City Council progresses towards making this dream a reality for locals and visitors alike.
