Looking for a free activity that will entertain your preschooler while helping them learn and grow? Storytime at Surry Hills Library is a fantastic weekly outing where children aged 3 to 5 years can enjoy stories, songs and plenty of fun alongside other local families.
Running every Wednesday during Term 3, these engaging sessions are designed to spark a lifelong love of books while helping children build important skills before they start school.
More Than Just Storytelling
Storytime is much more than sitting and listening to a book.
During each 30-minute session, children will:
- Listen to engaging stories
- Join in with songs and rhymes
- Develop early language and literacy skills
- Build confidence in a group setting
- Learn to listen, share and interact with other children
- Spend quality time reading with their parent or carer
These simple activities play an important role in supporting children’s communication, imagination and school readiness—all while having plenty of fun.
A Great Way to Prepare for School
Regular story sessions help children become familiar with books, introduce new vocabulary and encourage a love of reading from an early age.
For many preschoolers, Storytime is also a wonderful opportunity to practise social skills by participating in group activities, following routines and making new friends before starting Kindergarten.
No Bookings Needed
One of the best things about Storytime is how easy it is to attend.
There’s no need to book—simply arrive a little early to secure your place, as sessions begin promptly at 11:30am.
If Surry Hills isn’t your closest library, similar weekly Storytime sessions are also available at Darling Square, Green Square, Newtown and Glebe Libraries.
