When people hear the words film and drama, they often picture children learning lines or performing on a stage. While that’s certainly part of it, what we see every week at Bondi Performing Arts is something much bigger.

Drama gives children the chance to imagine, create, collaborate and problem-solve. It encourages them to speak with confidence, think creatively, work as a team and discover that their ideas have value.

Bondi Performing Arts began just over two years ago with one small class. Since then, we’ve grown to four weekly classes for children and teenagers, with plans to introduce a specialised class for young people interested in auditioning and learning more about the acting industry.

What makes our classes a little different is that the children don’t simply perform published scripts. Much of what they are acting has been written especially for them by playwright and television scriptwriter Nicholas Flanagan, allowing each project to be tailored to the ages, personalities and abilities of the students in the room.

Throughout the year our students explore both stage and screen acting. They learn the different skills each requires, play improvisation games, develop characters and work together to bring original stories to life. This term we have been creating short films, giving students the exciting experience of seeing themselves on screen while learning how filmmaking works behind the scenes.

One of the most rewarding parts of teaching is watching children grow in confidence. Some arrive bursting with energy and learn to channel it into truthful performances. Others begin quietly, gradually finding the confidence to speak up, contribute ideas and perform in front of others. There is plenty of laughter along the way, but they’re also developing communication, creativity and collaboration—skills that will benefit them well beyond the performing arts.

This July we’ll be running our 3-Day Film & Drama Workshop at the Bondi Beach Scout Hall from the 13th-15th of July for children aged 8-12 years. Across three fun-filled days, participants explore acting for both stage and screen through theatre games, improvisation, character creation and imaginative storytelling. The workshop concludes with a live performance for family and friends on the final afternoon—a highlight for both the children and their families.

The workshop is led by Bondi Performing Arts co-founders Allison Butler and Nicholas Flanagan, who are both experienced performers and educators and bring a wealth of performance and teaching experience, creating a supportive environment where every child is encouraged to participate and grow.

Whether a child dreams of pursuing acting professionally or simply enjoys being creative, our goal is the same: to help them develop practical performance skills, build confidence, make friends and discover the joy of storytelling. We aim to nurture both beginners and more experienced young performers, giving every child the opportunity to learn new skills, build on existing ones and enjoy the creative process in a welcoming and encouraging environment.

For families looking for a creative activity these school holidays—or interested in our weekly term classes—we’d love to welcome you to Bondi Performing Arts.
