NSW Parliament is hosting the Festival of Democracy as part of the Macquarie Street Adventure, offering a free school holiday program for children aged 5–12 and their families.

This one-day event provides a structured introduction to how democracy operates, using interactive activities to explain how decisions are made, how laws are created and why participation in civic processes matters.

What’s Included

The program includes a range of educational and hands-on experiences:

  • Access to the historic parliamentary chambers, providing insight into where decisions are debated and made
  • Creative workshops designed to explore civic ideas through practical activities
  • Voting activities that demonstrate how elections work in a simplified format
  • Mock committee role play, allowing children to participate in discussion and decision-making processes
  • A historical reenactment of the Magna Carta signing, highlighting early developments in democratic principles

These activities are designed to present complex concepts in a clear and accessible way for primary-aged children.

Why This Is a Valuable Learning Opportunity

The Festival of Democracy introduces children to the structure and purpose of democratic systems at an early age. Understanding how government operates, how laws are formed and how individuals can participate in decision-making helps build foundational knowledge that is relevant throughout life.

By engaging in activities such as voting simulations and role play, children can observe how different perspectives are considered and how collective decisions are reached. This supports the development of critical thinking, communication skills and an understanding of fairness and representation.

Early exposure to these concepts can also encourage long-term awareness of civic responsibility. Learning about democracy in a practical setting helps children recognise the importance of participation, whether through voting, discussion or community involvement, and how these actions contribute to shaping society over time.
