Yes Yes Yes is an award-winning show specifically designed for young adults, dealing with the difficult area of consent. Presented as part of Seymour Centre’s Arts Education program, this is an insightful piece that supports parents looking for meaningful theatre for their children that aligns with NSW curriculum outcomes.
Part documentary, part confession, part open conversation, Yes Yes Yes is a theatre show created specifically for teenagers exploring the knotty and necessary topics of healthy relationships, desire and consent.
“Young people have the skills already to be having super healthy consensual relationships with everyone in their lives.” says Karin McCracken, writer and performer of Yes Yes Yes. “The thing that I really love about this show is that it includes the idea of sexual desire and sexual pleasure being such an important part of our conversations of consent.”
Often the topics explored in the show are confronting and uncomfortable, especially discussions around sexual violence. The show was developed with Rape Prevention Education to ensure the content and messaging follows best practice guidelines and aligns with the NSW PDHPE and Life Ready syllabus for years 10 to 12.
“As a parent of a teenager (Rochelle), I wasn’t sure how I felt about theatre-makers educating her about sex, consent and healthy relationships. Then again, she won’t talk to me about it – I have tried…..I suspected it would be more like a lecture and ever so slightly self-righteous; Rochelle, too, thought it would be a lot more “lecturey” but….it was funny, thoughtful and entirely relatable….I can’t recommend this highly enough; it should be a must for teens and their caregivers.” NZ Herald.
The work features in-depth interviews with real life teenagers and is an empathic and engaging entry point to what can be an embarrassing topic of conversation. “I hope that young people come away from the show with a better understanding of what consent is and [feel] hopeful at how it can play out in their lives.” Says Eleanor Bishop, writer and director of Yes Yes Yes. Humorous, witty and moving, Yes Yes Yes aims to help spark conversation where conversation can be difficult between teenagers and their adults.
Recommended for ages 14+ and their guardians, each show includes a 20-minute post-show Q&A to allow for audience members to ask questions and voice their thoughts about the work.
Showing from 20 – 23 May at Seymour Centre with 10am, 12:30pm and 6:30pm performance times available.
