Kellie Richardson, celebrity interior designer and CEO of Kurved by Design, Australia’s leading staging and interior design business, reveals how to embrace the Pantone Colour of the Year 2025: Mocha Mousse.

Kellie Richardson, CEO of Kurved by Design and the country’s first online interior design academy, has shared her expert advice on how homeowners can integrate Pantone’s 2025 Colour of the Year, Mocha Mousse (PANTONE 17-1230), into their living spaces. The warm, earthy tone has already captured the attention of interior enthusiasts worldwide and is set to transform homes into tranquil, sophisticated sanctuaries.

Why Mocha Mousse is Significant

According to Richardson, Mocha Mousse is more than just a colour, it is a reflection of our collective desire for comfort, balance and connection to nature in 2025.

“The rich, grounding undertones of Mocha Mousse evoke a sense of calm and warmth that we all crave, especially as we navigate the year ahead,” Richardson said.

“It is versatile, timeless and adds an understated elegance to any space.”

Pantone’s choice for 2025 also highlights the growing trend towards natural hues in both fashion and interior design, as people look to create spaces that promote well-being and harmony.

Richardson has provided her top tips on how to incorporate Mocha Mousse into the home like an expert.

You don’t have to have a lot of money to achieve the ultimate look

“I have been in the interior design business for many years and what I have come to understand is that design starts with a good eye and a sense of the feeling you are trying to create in your space,” Richardson said.

“Select items that are meaningful for you.  Don’t just fill your home with items that you think look good.  Good spaces create effective connections between people.   Include elements that reflect the style, colour and energy you are trying to achieve and also incorporate items that have a positive connection with your life and memories.

“Spend time visiting op shops, and secondhand market places.   You can always find great items at a significantly lower prices by purchasing pre-loved items.”

Add soft furnishings to introduce Mocha Mousse

“Go to your nearest hardware store and get a colour sample of Mocha Mousse.  Carry this with you as you search for items to match your colour requirements,” Richardson said.

“Soft furnishings are easy to place around the home and the most ideal way to introduce Mocha Mousse into your living space.  Look at items such as throw cushions, blankets and rugs. These accents add warmth without overwhelming your existing décor.”

Statement walls for a bold transformation

“Statement walls are easy to create and also easy to undo with a lick of paint.  Select a large wall in the home that can be used as a feature wall and paint it in Mocha Mousse. Pair it with neutrals like cream, beige or light greys to create a balanced and calming aesthetic,” Richardson said.

If you’re not confident tackling a statement wall yourself, working with professional house painters in Melbourne can help bring your colour vision to life with expert precision.

Layer with textures

“Layering is a great way to introduce different textures.  Combine the rich hue with natural textures such as linen, timber or jute,” Richardson said.

“Textured elements amplify the colour’s organic qualities and make a room feel more inviting.  Layering can be achieved by placing different pillows together on a lounge chair.  It can also be achieved by placing a wooden item next to another item made out of a different product such as stone.”

Metallics

“Add a touch of luxury by pairing Mocha Mousse with warm metallics like gold or brass.  The combination elevates the colour, creating a timeless and sophisticated look,” Richarson said.

“This can be achieved through clever placement of items around the home.”

Incorporate art and accessories

“Curate decorative elements like vases, artwork and ceramics in Mocha Mousse tones. These subtle touches enhance cohesion in your space,” Richardson said.

“Art should always be the main starting point for design when it comes to restyling a home.  Art pieces should be prominent and supported by other items and elements.”

Balance with nature

“Pair Mocha Mousse with indoor plants to connect with the natural world. Greenery complements the earthy palette, creating a serene and refreshing environment,” Richardson said.

“Plants come in a range of options these days.  You are not just limited to pots.  It is possible to create indoor plant walls or living walls, table plants, hanging planters and much more.  Be creative and look at different ways to incorporate plants into your living spaces.”
