Hi my name is Karen Freyer. I’m running as the Independent candidate for the electorate of Vaucluse in the upcoming State election on March 25 but I’m not a politician.

I’m running as I’m concerned my children might not have the same opportunities I’ve had, because our environment and economy risk being blighted by the effects of human-induced climate change.

I feel I can no longer look away from the incipient disaster of rising sea levels, warming of the land and species extinction. I am also concerned about the loss of integrity and transparency in our government, and about persisting gender inequity.

Where and how long have you lived in Sydney’s east?

I was born and raised in the Eastern Suburbs, and went to school locally. I learned to sail at Woollahra Sailing Club, and spent my weekends out on the water at Rose Bay. My husband and I met here, and we can think of no better place to raise a family.

Three words that describe what it’s like to live in the eastern suburbs?

Privileged, outdoorsy, stimulating.

How many children?

Two boys, Oskar and Gabriel, aged 9 and 7.

Favourite Park:

Steyne Park. My mother and grandmother took me there when I was young and I feel privileged to be able to share it with my sons.

Favourite Beach:

Nielsen Park.

Favourite kid friendly cafe:

My boys love the spaghetti bolognese at Arte Bianca. They say it’s even better than mine!

Favourite Coffee Spot:

The Navy Bear

Favourite date night place:

My husband and I have been going to the Golden Age Cinema quite a lot recently. It’s located inside the heritage-listed Paramount Pictures Building on Commonwealth Street in Surry Hills and has a bar, delicious food and a fascinating film program. I couldn’t recommend it more highly.

Where in the east have you yet to explore and would like to ?

I’ve heard there are seahorses at Parsley Bay. Once the campaign is over, snorkelling there with my children will be top of my list!

What would you like to see improve in the eastern suburbs?

Open a second public high school.

There is no Government high school in the Woollahra local government area and only one in the Waverley local government area: Rose Bay Secondary College which is over-capacity. Eastern suburbs parents deserve more options, especially since private schools are becoming more and more expensive. If I win the seat of Vaucluse in the upcoming NSW election in March, I’m committed to ensuring a new co-educational, public high school is built in the eastern suburbs.

Favourite Local Shop:

Baker Bleu. I’m addicted to their pain au chocolate

Favourite wet weather location:

Home with a nice cup of tea

Favourite Local family Weekend Activity?

Spending the day at Double Bay beach with my family.
