Every child is different — and so are their orthodontic needs. Some younger children may benefit from early guidance or treatment, while teenagers need different management as they are generally at a very different stage of dental and facial development.
So, although there can be some overlap, orthodontic treatment for young children is usually quite differently to teens' treatment.
One of the most important things we look at in children and teenagers is facial growth and tooth eruption. It plays a large role in how the smile, jaws and bite develop over time.
Understanding how these change helps us decide if and when treatment may be helpful, as not every child will need orthodontic treatment.
However, an assessment at the right time can help ensure that opportunities for simple or more effective treatment are not missed.

About Dr. Martin Fine
Dr. Fine completed his specialist training in Orthodontics and Facial Growth and Development at the University of Manitoba, Canada. Over the past 25+ years, he has put that expertise to work treating a wide range of complex cases, collaborating in multidisciplinary specialist teams alongside cosmetic dentists, oral and maxillofacial surgeons, and periodontists.
Dr. Fine has been invited to lecture at national and international events. He is a member of the Australian Society of Orthodontists (ASO), the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO), and has managed a significant number of Invisalign® and other aligner cases.
