Looking for a fun and festive way to celebrate Lunar New Year with the kids? Make your way into the city for Sydney Lunar Streets, a vibrant street festival transforming Haymarket into a glowing celebration of culture, colour and community.

From Chinatown to Thaitown, Haymarket’s laneways will come alive as Sydney welcomes the Year of the Horse with lanterns, lion dances, live music and plenty of delicious street food. It’s a wonderful opportunity for families to experience Lunar New Year traditions in a relaxed, open-air setting — and best of all, it’s completely free.

Kids will love watching the energetic lion dances, spotting the giant fire horse installation towering over Dixon Street, and wandering beneath a canopy of glowing lunar lanterns along Hay Street. There’s even a carousel for younger visitors, plus interactive fun like mahjong tables that offer a hands-on cultural experience for older children.

Parents can soak up the festive atmosphere while enjoying DJs, market stalls and a mix of traditional and contemporary performances spread throughout the precinct. It’s an easy way to introduce little ones to Lunar New Year customs while enjoying a lively summer evening together.
